Busch - On June 26, 2003, "smart forfour day" in Zurich, more than just the original was presented to the international press. The Busch 1:87-scale model had been produced at the same time as the real car, so the first models could be given to the press during the presentation of the full-size model.
The new Busch model of the forfour captivates the viewer with its fine lines and typical smart color offset by the contrasting Tridion. The taillights are as beautifully detailed as the realistic headlights. On each side, three tiny lenses are separately inserted into the flat black panels. In addition, the four door handles on the model are separate pieces, produced in flat black like the windshield wipers. The accurately reproduced multipart interior allows the model to have colors faithful to the original. The miniature vehicle gets an extra boost from the fine printing of the glass roof, window columns, logos and the high center-mounted brake light. The elaborately painted four-spoke rims lend a special sporty note to the model.
Well, the H0-scale people will be pleased: now they can make a "smarter" trip with room "for four" inside...
The 1:87 model of the Smart forfour will be offered during the IAA (September 2003) at the Smart stand and will be available afterwards from Smart dealers. [See the Busch web site for more details]

US-Models - Ulrich Schmidt's US-Models announced the second batch of new items for 2003 (shown above). All of these are resin models, made out of transparent material, and come with all the necessary parts. However, they will have to be painted and assembled by the modeler.
Wiking announces the following models for delivery in August. It will probably be late September before these items arrive on retailers’ shelves in the U.S.
New Tooling
060 02 29 – VW Touareg with roof rack and surf-board, metallic gray-green with beige interior: Just in time for the summer holidays, Wiking’s high-end 4x4 gets the roof rack previously found only on the Volkswagen promotional models. Not only is there a roof rack, Wiking has added a surfboard to go with it. Another load which Wiking displayed in Nuremberg was a ski-box, so expect another variation on this theme to come later this year. The model below the rack is as marvelous as Wiking models get. Estimated U.S. Retail $14.50. 393 01 32 – John Deere 6920 S: One of the absolute highlights of this year’s Nuremberg Toy Fair, the hand-made sample made it to production. Wiking claims their model of the 160hp farm tractor to be the non-plus-ultra of plastic ready-mades in this scale, which is quite a statement, given how nice a model already the Massey-Ferguson is. However, it seems the model will lack the paintwork of previous models, but will be offered in colored plastic only. Estimated U.S. Retail $17.00. 888 01 20 – Amazone fertilizer spreader (1960s’ vintage): Just as with their contemporary farm tractors, Wiking completes the range of vintage vehicles with various equipment. The 1960s’ fertilizer spreader is the first, but not the last item. And in case of a breakdown, the appropriate service van has been available since June. Estimated U.S. Retail $7.50.

New Colors
035 09 24 – VW New Beetle, black with gray interior: The original Beetle’s production finally comes to an end, but its successor-in-mind is about as successful, if only as a Wiking model. The ninth color version will come painted in black, as an earlier promotional model for Volkswagen did. Estimated U.S. Retail $10.50. 057 04 22 – VW Golf Mk. IV, tropical orange with black interior: A month before the Mk.V Golf’s introduction at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September, Wiking presents another paint version of Germany’s eternal best-seller. By the way, Frankfurt will not only see the next generation Golf’s prototype, but a Wiking model as well. Estimated U.S. Retail $8.50. 131 04 28 – Audi TT Roadster with driver, metallic black with light-brown interior: Wiking has a long tradition of offering driver figures with their convertibles. It was broken for years, but eventually continued with 2002’s ride-on lawn-mower. Estimated U.S. Retail $14.00. 537 03 42 – MAN TGA XXL-cab tractor-trailer “John Deere”: Athearn’s successful recipe to offer a line of appropriately colored trucks with their John Deere farm tractors apparently was appealing to Wiking, too. So, here we get a MAN promotional rig, lettered with the slogan, Technology that pays off. Estimated U.S. Retail $36.00. 619 03 34 – Iveco EuroFire DLK 23-12 ladder-truck: Wiking’s Magirus ladder finally gets the yellow markings on a red body to match the other fire trucks. Estimated U.S. Retail $21.00. 650 04 20 – Road Roller, dark gray: Another addition to Wiking’s current construction equipment color scheme. Estimated U.S. Retail $7.50. 815 04 22 – Triumph TR4, black with brown interior: The classic British roadster of the 60s gets its third color scheme within the regular range. As nice as ever! Estimated U.S. Retail $8.50. 867 01 24 – Fork-lift, blue-grey: Produced from 1959 to 1984, Wiking’s lift-truck was robust enough to be a child’s toy. The re-issues seem to be welcomed by a strong collector community. The operator demonstrates how the Wiking people looked in earlier times. Estimated U.S. Retail $10.50. 894 02 26 – Borgward Isabella with camping-trailer, turquoise green: A new color for the Easter egg, dating as far back as 1954 (the trailer, that is). Estimated U.S. Retail $12.00.
