This Athey Mobil II HLD sweeper model was built by David Flynn from a Custom Finishing Models white metal kit. The prototype with this type of cab and hood was made from circa 1983 to circa 1990. Dave added the muffler/exhaust pipe, beacon light, mirrors, spotlights, tail lights, reflectors, and license plates. The diameter of the main broom that comes with the kit is too small for Dave's liking. It is accurate for a well worn broom. Dave substituted part of a tube for mechanical pencil lead and textured it on all surfaces with sandpaper and a sanding disc. He painted it red because most of the real ones he's have seen are red polypropylene. Dave decided to build it as a single gutter broom model and use the other gutter broom for a future project so he built a dirt deflector for the left side of the vehicle. He also built the underside and back of the hopper so the sweeper would not look so hollow when viewed from a low position.
