Ertl's International Payhauler was the donor for this model. The Payhauler was chosen because prototypically it is a 4x4 vehicle. Using just the front piece would allow the front wheels to be driven; an excellent candidate for a slag pot transporter. The slag pot came from a railroad car. Wayne notes that in hindsight a shield should have been added behind and on the top of the cab in case any splash of the molten metal occurred.
