Athearn announced November 4, 2004 that they will be producing both the Mack R and B models in various configurations. Here's
the text of the full announcement from Athearn:
The Mack Model "B" was first produced in 1949
[Note: Our information is that production actually began in 1953
- webmaster] and remained in production until 1966 when it was
replaced by the Model "R". Both series of trucks enjoyed
a long service life with many of the "R" models still in
continuous service. Even today, a Model "B" can also occasionally
be seen in operation. During their life times both types were converted
to any number of tasks. These ranged from two and three axle tractors,
to tow trucks, to use as construction trucks. A Mack Model "B"
or Model "R" could handle any job that required a heavy-duty
truck.
Athearn's latest Ready-To-Roll vehicles are exacting
miniatures of the Mack "B" and "R" family of trucks
that have been faithfully reproduced in the 1/87th scale. They will
be available equipped for tow truck, dump truck, cement mixer and
over-the-road tractor service. Each variant is modeled from documented
Mack trucks and captures the distinctive qualities of each prototype.
* Mack licensed models * Available in either two or
three axle versions to duplicate the prototype * Clear molded windows
* Factory assembled with all detail parts applied * Meticulously detailed
molded and photo-etched parts * Vinyl tires * Molded cab interiors
* Razor sharp printing and painting
