Herpa’s third package of new models for 2003 includes another fair amount of newly tooled items, all of which had been announced more or less directly at the Nuremberg Toy Fair in February. As usual, there are also many models differing only in paint or print from previously released vehicles, and the various editions will grow in size.
023184 – 2003 Audi A3 3.2 Quattro, white. In Nuremberg, only a disguised sample hinted at the introduction of yet another high-end Audi model. Now that the prototype has officially been unveiled and first promotional items are available at Audi dealers, Herpa confirms the model’s delivery for early summer. The twin exhaust pipes identify the top-of-the line version of Ingolstadt’s latest compact car that borrows the narrow-angled 3.2-liter V6 from its Volkswagen Golf brother. In fact, the second generation A3 is based entirely on the Golf V’s drivetrain, the latter being scheduled for the Frankfurt IAA show in September. All-new tooling. Suggested retail price $9.75. 033183 – 2003 Audi A3 3.2 Quattro, as above, piedmont red metallic. Suggested retail price $10.50. 045834 – 2002 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, German Police. Commenting on the W211 E-Class to be made by Herpa two months ago, we speculated about several emergency vehicles based on Mercedes’ mid-range sedan to come. Here is the first one, decorated in a metallic silver and green scheme patterned after the launch version Mercedes-Benz showcased at various trade fairs. The model looks to be almost identical to the item delivered last December by Wiking. Suggested retail price $13.50. 045858 – 1996 BMW 5-Series Touring, Mobile Service BMW Group. These metallic-silver wagons are stationed at larger BMW dealerships all over Germany to assist in the case of a breakdown, for both BMW and Mini drivers. If a Rolls-Royce ever decided to break down, which the “best car of the world” is not supposed to do, a technician would probably be sent in a helicopter from Goodwood. At least, that was the saying before the BMW takeover. Herpa produced an almost identical model as a promotional item for BMW. Suggested retail price $13.50. 101486 – 2002 Mini Cooper S, Flag Edition, Spain. Another black Mini Cooper S with a colorful roof, this time painted for Spain. Limited edition supplied in PC packaging. Suggested retail price $18.95. 101493 - 2002 Mini Cooper S, Flag Edition, Japan. Same model and packaging; different flag. Suggested retail price $18.95. 045841 – 2001 MAN LE 2000 LF 10/6, Fire Brigade. The Ziegler pumper body first appeared in the March and April announcements, on a Mercedes Atego chassis at that time. With the modified MAN L2000, now called the LE-Class, Herpa made additional new tooling for the crew-cab. The paint scheme is generic rather than showing markings for a specific fire brigade. New tooling. Suggested retail price $19.50. 045868 – 2001 BMW 3 Series Compact, County of Offenbach Fire Department. The county of Offenbach in Hesse, close to Frankfurt, uses this entry-level BMW. Signals and markings probably are magnetic devices so that the fire chief may take home an unmarked car when he is off-duty. Suggested retail price $13.50. 045872 – 2000 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter box-type van, City of Frankfurt Fire Department. Another bright red vehicles from Hesse, the Sprinter with its superstructure made by Kögel is best known for being used by the German freight post. In Frankfurt, however, the city’s fire brigade has several of these light vans in use for internal transport purposes. Suggested retail price $15.75. 045889 – 2001 Mini Cooper, BMW Fire Department BMW. At BMW’s Regensburg plant, where the 3-Series are assembled, the factory fire brigade was assigned this smallish Mini. One is reminded of Busch’s model of the Smart City Coupe decorated for the Sachtleben Chemie factory fire brigade. Suggested retail price $14.25. 149129 – 2002 Renault Magnum (facelift) tank tractor-trailer, Hümmer Transportation. This third-generation Magnum tractor pulling a tank semi-trailer may transport food and beverages only, as the lettering indicates. Limited edition. Suggested retail price $32.95. 149143 – 2002 Mercedes-Benz Actros LH-cab (facelift) tank tractor-trailer, Nordtank. Based in Lower Saxony, the Nordtank transportation company concentrates on fuel transports all over Europe. The tractor is the first modified Actros tractor to come without a roof-spoiler and deflectors. Hence, new tooling. Suggested retail price $31.50. 149150 – 2000 MAN TGA LX-cab container tractor-trailer, Deisser/P&O Nedlloyd. The high, but narrow LX-cab of MAN’s TGA flagship range got its roof spoiler and deflectors quite recently, at least as part of Herpa’s line. The trailer is loaded with a 40’ sea-container coloured for P&O Nedlloyd. Suggested retail price $31.50. 149167 – 2002 Renault Magnum (facelift) refrigerated tractor-trailer, Fendler Transportation. This third-generation Magnum tractor is only Renault in Klaus Fendler’s fleet, which consists of about 100 Scanias and Mercedes. Previously, there was only one promotional model made for the hauling company out of Eding, South of Munich. Limited edition. Suggested retail price $32.95. 149198 – 2000 MAN TGA LX-cab Lowliner tractor-trailer, Grossmann Transportation. Continuing a series of promotional and regular truck models painted in metallic silver, the MAN TGA also features the LX-cab with the rather new aerodynamics kit. New tooling for the trailer’s side-protection bar. Limited edition. Suggested retail price $34.50. 149228 – 1996 Scania R144 Topline refrigerated tractor-trailer, Sturm Transportation. With respect to their Scania repair shop, the Sturm hauling company operates an all-Scania fleet. The paint and print scheme from the border’s region around Aachen is not a new one for the Herpa range, and collectors had asked for another truck in the eye-catching color combination. Suggested retail price $32.95. 149136 – 1996 Scania T144 conventional silo tractor-trailer, Kraft Transportation. Due to harsh length restrictions, conventionals are rare sights on European roads. About the only exceptions are tank and silo rigs, in which cases the cargo’s weight makes for rather short semi-trailers. Limited edition. Suggested retail price $32.95. 149235 – 2002 Mercedes-Benz Actros L facelift bulk-container tractor-trailer, Hoyer-Talke. Hoyer and Talke are among the biggest German hauling companies all on their own, and big collector’s themes for that reason. In the case of dry bulk logistics, both forwarders started to cooperate a few years ago, with the occasional Herpa model showing the two names. Suggested retail price $32.95. 149211 – 2000 MAN TGA 41.660 XXL-cab lowboy tractor-trailer, Voss. Voss of Dortmund is one of the better-known German heavy haulers. Following two promotional models, this model features both last year’s 660hp-MAN heavy-duty tractor and the telescopic bridge introduced at the 2003 Nuremberg toy fair. The large crate is supplied by Heico Model. Suggested retail price $49.50. 149112 – 2001 MAN LE-Class three-way tipper. Herpa’s little three-way tipper truck gets a modified cab – the MAN L2000 is now called LE-Class. The truck of 7.5 metric tons GVW is colored in the red-and-silver scheme of almost all of Herpa’s construction vehicles. New tooling. Suggested retail price $15.95. 149204 – 2002 Volvo FH12 Globetrotter XL (facelift) tractor. Introduced about a year ago, the prototype of Volvo’s modified FH series now gets a place within Herpa’s range. The initial delivery will feature the range-topping Globetrotter XL cab and will be colored in red. According to Herpa, the model will get a prototypically correct chassis, dumping the previous model’s compromise. Different cab versions are to follow later. New tooling. Suggested retail price $15.95. 148917 – Liebherr L580 wheel-loader, Max Wild. Max Wild is a hauling and building company, and Herpa already produced several appropriately colored models. The fact that this is the third colour scheme of Herpa’s large wheel-loader tells a lot about the model’s success. Limited edition. Suggested retail price $36.95.

Private Collection
120449 – 2000 MAN TGA XXL-cab tractor-trailer, 100 Years ADAC. Germany’s largest automobile club celebrates its 100th birthday in 2003. ADAC, which stands for Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil Club, has 14.4 million members today, but was founded as a motorcyclist’s association in 1903. The club gained its importance from a roadside service introduced in 1953, when the automobile manufacturers did not offer this kind of service as part of warranty agreements. According to Herpa, this specially designed truck does not have a prototype. PC packaging; limited edition. Suggested retail price $66.95. 120456 – 2002 Volvo FH12 Globetrotter refrigerated tractor-trailer, Transmess Transporting (The Vassal). Transmess is one of the many German hauling companies to operate an airbrushed show-truck designed by Walter Rosner. The all-new Volvo FH rig features a medieval knight scene. While the model on the photo shows the Globetrotter XL cab, the Herpa brochure mentions the smaller Globetrotter cab. Another Transmess truck is already announced for a later time this year. PC packaging; limited edition. Suggested retail price $75.00.
