Wiking announced their releases for October 2003. Five Volkswagens and nine other vehicles form the fifth set of models Wiking will ship to hobby shops and retailers.
New Tooling:
032 01 27 – VW New Beetle convertible, metallic Alaska green with cream interior: Almost a year has passed since Volkswagen dealers in Germany got their promotional models in an uncountable variety of colors. Now, perfectly timed for relaxed top-down cruising on twisty fall roads, the regular version enters the stage. As did the riding lawn mower and the Audi TT roadster before, it comes with a driver figure: a female one in this case. Wiking stresses the fact that she is not supplied by Preiser, but is an in-house development. Estimated U.S. retail price is $13.00. 305 01 27 – VW Touran, red with gray interior. One more Volkswagen from Wiking and one of the latest things to leave the Wolfsburg production site in the real world. The prototype is based on the all-new Golf Mk5 which was just introduced at the Frankfurt auto show and, although it is a late arrival, is doing very well against the Opel Zafira in Europe. However, the Touran is not likely to appear in the U.S. As for the Wiking model, it remains to be seen whether or not it comes painted. Estimated U.S. retail price is $13.00. 383 40 23 – Claas rear-mounted rotary mower. As could be guessed at the Nuremberg toy fair in February, more equipment for the heavy farm tractors is added to the range. With a width of more than 25 feet, this is definitely a large piece of equipment. It consists of three front-end rotary mowers, but is designed to be attached to the tractor’s rear mounting, meaning the tractor must be operated in reverse. Expect the line of harvesting implements to grow continuously. Estimated U.S. retail price is $9.50. 887 01 20 – Fortuna fertilizer spreader (ca. 1960). Similar in function to the Amazone fertilizer spreader from the same era introduced earlier this year, the vintage agricultural tractors get their range of equipment, as well. Estimated U.S. retail price is $7.50.

New decoration:
034 03 26 – VW Polo, steel blue. Only the second body color for the current Polo, dark blue instead of the previous bright metallic blue. Despite its qualities, the Polo, which is not offered in the U.S., is only an also-ran long after the Golf in Europe. Estimated U.S. retail price is $12.00. 104 21 32 – VW Passat wagon, German police. Silver and green, which is the most common color scheme for German police cars, follows the similar silver-and-blue version, which was modeled after a Brandenburg prototype. The new car may be seen in a number of states, but it uses a modified body style Wiking does not offer. Estimated U.S. retail price is $17.50. 221 04 28 – Mercedes-Benz CLK 320 Coupé, metallic beige with black interior. Mercedes’ “small” coupé appears to have lost the camping trailer with which it was previously offered. Estimated U.S. retail price is $14.00. 085 03 22 – Opel Astra, jade green with black interior. The 2003 Frankfurt auto show already saw the next generation Astra, a 1/87th scale model of which is quite unlikely, but Wiking offers a third, and last, body color on the successful five-door hatchback – the eternal number two on the German market. Estimated U.S. retail price is $8.50. 813 03 26 – Jaguar Mk. II, Solent blue with dark-blue interior. Jaguar’s sporty sedan looks marvelous in about every color. This new version will be painted. Estimated U.S. retail price is $12.00. 834 37 26 – Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Coupé, silver-grey with black interior. The “pagoda,” dubbed because of the shape of its roof, had been offered without the hardtop from 1965 on. The hardtop version, however, is totally new tooling and certainly up the current standards. Estimated U.S. retail price is $12.00. 810 04 22 – VW Beetle, black with brown interior. It ran and ran and ran, but finally, the Beetle’s Mexican production came to an end after about 21.5 million cars being built. Wiking says “Good-bye” with a black model. Estimated U.S. retail price is $8.50. 894 40 30 – Mercedes-Benz 250 SE Coupé and motorboat on trailer, fresco green with black interior. The boat dates back to 1963 when Wiking proudly stated that it would actually float – the models were then considered toys rather than collector’s items, totally different from today. With the success of other reissued items from old tooling, yet another vintage trailer combo returns to Wiking’s range. Unfortunately, the tooling will remain as is, without being brought up to current standards. The wheels, taken from the “new” 280 SL, are the only contribution to four decades that passed since the model’s first introduction. Estimated U.S. retail price is $16.00. 868 01 20 – Front-end Dumper, blue-grey. Listed in the Wiking catalogue for 27 years from 1964 on, the re-issued small dumper illustrates how far Wiking has come in recent years: from robust, about-1/90th scale railroad accessories to accurate, high-end miniature models. Anyway, this is a prototype which still is seen on various construction sites, if in rather rusty condition nowadays. Estimated U.S. retail price is $7.50. 849 02 39 –Büssing BS 16 L truck and full trailer, Herforder Bier. Former Roskopf tooling, now included into the Wiking range. The models celebrates both Büssing’s 100th anniversary (the Brunswick manufacturer has long been part of the MAN Group) and the 125th anniversary of the Herford Brewery, which was a loyal customer of Büssing’s. Estimated U.S. retail price is $27.00.
