Herpa – As happens every two months, the largest German modelmaker recently announced a huge number of new models, most of which are print and color versions of existing tooling. Nonetheless, there were some really interesting models among the items that will be released in September and October. And, while most of us still are enjoying our summer holidays, Herpa has already revealed this year’s Christmas specials.
Passenger Cars and Light Trucks
BMW Mini Cooper S in British Union Jack Paint Scheme
101547 – Mini Cooper S, Italy, Private Collection 101561 – Mini Cooper S, Mexico, Private Collection Two more of these models come in black with a colorful roof, printed with Italy’s and Mexico’s national flags. With order number 101509, the U.K. version featuring the Union Jack (shown above) will be only available via Herpa’s eXtra shop from August on. Expect a similar treatment for the Stars & Stripes later this year. Limited edition each.
023191 – 2004 BMW 530i sedan, black 033190 – 2004 BMW 530i sedan, metallic green Very shortly after BMW received their promotional models in four colors, a pair of fifth-generations 5s will be available at hobby shops. As with all recent BMWs, they represent the state of the art in modelmaking. The prototype’s U.S. range will consist of 525i, 530i and 545i versions with six- or eight-cylinder engines while Herpa offers only the 530i with optional 17” alloys.
046008 – 2004 Mercedes-Benz Vito cargo van, green 046015 – 2004 Mercedes-Benz Vito 7-seater van, dark red As was the case previously, M-B’s smallest cargo and personnel transporters are also sold in their line of passenger cars. Both the commercial version, named Vito, and the upgraded people-carrier, now called the Viano (formerly V-class), are manufactured in Vitoria, northern Spain. Herpa has already delivered mid-wheelbase Viano promotional models to DaimlerChrysler, so the upmarket version will be part of Herpa’s regular range later this year. 045995 – Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (facelift) passenger/cargo van, BAG (German federal agency for road transport) This is the first model announced in a new Herpa series decorated for the German BAG, which is well known among truck drivers and operators for frequent roadside safety inspections.

045957 – BMW X5, BMW Regensburg Plant Fire Department A companion for the Mini in BMW factory fire brigade colors introduced by Herpa in its May and June releases. 045964 – Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (facelift) Strobel-RTW, Fire Department (EMS) 045971 – Mercedes-Benz E-class sedan, Fire Department (command car) 045988 – MAN LE2000 Ruthmann-Steiger TK310, Fire Department Corresponding to both recent changes in common prototype designs and Wiking’s current line of fire trucks, Herpa’s generically styled fire equipment gets a new color scheme – red bodies with yellow markings. These are the first three items to feature the new design. 149556 – Dietenhofen Fire Brigade Set: 25 Years of Herpa Scale Cars Celebrating 25 years of scale car production in the Bavarian village of Dietenhofen, Herpa will release a three-car fire brigade set. There is a M-B C-class wagon command car, a M-B Sprinter personnel van and a MAN M90 LF16/12 fire truck. Limited edition.

120272 – Volvo FH12 Globetrotter XL tractor-trailer, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Private Collection Continuing Herpa’s line of rigs decorated with motifs inspired by the sixteen German federal states. There is not a prototype! Limited edition. 120487 – Scania R164 Topline tractor-trailer, “Herpa presents…”, Private Collection The third Herpa promotion truck, operated by Jürgen Schmid of Teublitz in northern Bavaria. This rig’s theme is the “Cradle of Mankind”, but different topics will follow at irregular intervals. The general idea is to visualize world’s history on both prototypes and scale trucks. Design by Walter Rosner. Limited edition. 120494 – DAF XF95 SuperSpaceCab tractor-trailer, Fabrice Curty (Switzerland), Private Collection Coastal and deep-sea images on a dark-blue rig make for quite an impression. German Truck Models
149624 – Mercedes-Benz/Titan Actros L-cab SLT tractor and lowboy semi-trailer, Kühne & Nagel KN is one of the world’s largest sea-freight carriers, founded in Bremen, Germany, but headquartered in the Swiss village of Schindellegi these days. The dark-blue trucks, always box- or stake-type vehicles before, have been part of the Herpa range almost from the beginning. According to Herpa, this big rig with telescopic bridge and large vessel load does have a prototype. 149525 – Mercedes-Benz Atego dump-truck, THW Landau White vehicles retain better resale values than blue ones, and are easier to find on the used-vehicle market, so the German disaster relief organization went for white trucks with blue markings. This truck’s prototype can be found in the Bodensee region of Bavaria. 149532 – Scania T124 conventional tractor-trailer, Kümmerling Kümmerling is a famous German aperitif. The yellow semi is decorated with the well-known mini-bottles. Limited edition. 149563 – DAF XF95 SuperSpaceCab tractor-trailer, August Bauer & Son Forwarding. Special Releases
149655 – Starter Set Highway Truck Stop (2) As Herpa announced would happen when they introduced the first truck stop set earlier this year, they have expanded on the theme with a modern gas station. Most of the buildings are well-known Faller kits, but the pump sections needed to be developed from scratch by Herpa as existing models are too low to accommodate a contemporary truck. Apart from these as well as repair-shop and office buildings, the Herpa set will include varying assortments of three European rigs, two passenger cars and a light truck. Limited edition. 149716 – "Silver Arrow" Train Set, AC (Märklin) 149761 – "Silver Arrow" Train Set, DC (Märklin/Trix) The previous “rolling highway” train set must have sold quite successfully. The new set, to be delivered to hobby shops in November, will contain Märklin’s brand-new 182-series electric locomotive (known as the Taurus in Germany) with very special “silver arrow” decoration, six two-level open auto racks and 24 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren supercars in several colors. While these open auto racks are the preferred way of shipping new cars in Germany and the SLR McLaren indeed comes to the Continent by train, a supercar with such an enormous price tag would probably be transported in closed cars. The big, big surprise is that Herpa announced the SLR well before DaimlerChrysler got the promotional models for the Frankfurt auto show in September. The regular release will have to wait until April next year. Limited edition of 1,000 sets.
Christmas Specials
149495 – 2003 Advent Calendar 2003 - Beginning in 2002, Herpa replaced the well-known 24-piece Christmas calendars with a four-car, PC-box version for the Sundays before Christmas. Featuring black convertibles and roadsters with bright gold trim last year, the contents will be black sedans with, well, bright gold trim in 2003. Limited edition.
149501 – Volvo FH11 Globetrotter XL tractor-trailer, Christmas Special 2003 - The Christmas truck did not change – Herpa’s newest truck-tractor pulls a box-type semi-trailer, decorated in black and gold. Limited edition.
