Promoting Excellence in HO Scale Vehicle Modeling

New Zealand Intermodal Fleet - By Ray Foot

This group of container haulers is from New Zealand modeler Ray Foot. The two New Zealand Express trucks (yellow and red) on the left are show above with two Wilder Transport trucks on the right (green and white). The two N10 Volvos (above, far left and above, far right) are Wiking models, the Mercedes Benz (above, middle right) is a Herpa kit, and the G88 Volvo day cab (above, middle left) has been modified from a sleeper cab F88 Volvo from Albedo. Although the F88 (set back front axle) version was more popular throughout Europe, these cabover Volvos were only sold as the G88 ( set forward axle) in New Zealand. Most of the G88s in New Zealand were sleeper cab versions but there were a few day cab examples as well. The most popular role for the G88 Volvos in New Zealand was as a 6x4 rigid stock truck towing a three axle stock trailer.

New Zealand Express is one of the oldest transport companies in New Zealand and although they have changed owners over the years, they are still in business operating container trucks from their Christchurch depot. The G88 Volvo 8x4 tractor unit is a replica of one they had on the road in the 1980s. At the time an 8x4 tractor unit was extremely rare and it was used for heavy haulage work around Canterbury.
