Promoting Excellence in HO Scale Vehicle Modeling

1967 Wayne 2-945 Street Sweeper - By Dave Flynn

David Flynn built this 1967 Wayne 2-945 originally around 1988 and it was one of the very first kitbashes he made. It is modeled after one of two similar sweepers owned by the Town of Smithtown he remembers as a child. The model was made from the cab of a Matchbox 1964 BP Dodge tow truck, sheet plastic, and parts from other vehicles. Over the past few months David took it apart, added details, and repainted it. The rear wheels are from a Herpa Unimog, front wheels are from a Wiking truck, and the gutter broom was made from the funnel on the rear of a Wiking Mercedes-Benz tractor. Originally the pickup broom was in the up position and was made from a piece of a plastic tube for holding lead for mechanical pencils. However, David thought the model would look better with the broom down and made the new broom from a wooden dowel.

David has also added the interior, front bumper, mirrors, tree guards, windshield wipers, tail lights, rear warning lights, and decals. The interior is from his scrap box; he believes it is from a CMW International VCO cabover truck. The bumper is from sheet plastic. The regular mirrors are sheet metal ones from a Sheepscot kit. The fender mounted ones are from a Roco Dodge pickup purchased in the '80s. The tree guards over the cab are rigid metal wire. The tail lights are jewel marker lights for model trains and the rear warning lights are from an Athearn Ford C fire engine. The decals were homemade on his Mac computer. David used Testors enamels to try to match the prototype's lemon yellow and "Ecology Green" paint scheme.
